AI Short Film for the Higgsfield Action Contest

KANJIRU.AI created Matilda, an original AI-generated short film developed for the Higgsfield Action Contest in celebration of International Women's Day. Combining cinematic storytelling, generative AI, visual effects, and symbolic action sequences, the film explores themes of representation, bias, and the women whose contributions to technology have too often been overlooked.

Rather than telling a conventional action story, Matilda uses surrealism, satire, and metaphor to challenge outdated narratives. Every scene was designed to transform frustration into cinematic expression, replacing violence with imagination and destruction with transformation.

Story Concept

Matilda is not a hero driven by revenge.

She is a programmer, a dreamer, and a creator.

Inside her dreams, rigid hierarchies collapse, outdated systems fracture, and invisible barriers reveal themselves as nothing more than broken code. Explosive action sequences, impossible environments, and cinematic visual effects become symbolic representations of cultural systems that have failed to evolve.

Instead of destroying people, Matilda rewrites the system itself.

Inspired by pioneers such as Ada Lovelace and Grace Hopper, the film reframes the required action sequence of the Higgsfield contest into a visual metaphor about rewriting history, restoring representation, and imagining a more inclusive future.

Original AI Character Design

Matilda was created entirely from scratch as an original AI-generated character developed specifically for this project.

From facial design and wardrobe to expressions, movement, and cinematic performance, every aspect of the character was art directed using generative AI and refined through creative direction, editing, and visual storytelling.

Rather than functioning as a generic AI avatar, Matilda was designed to embody intelligence, curiosity, resilience, and quiet determination. Her expressive performance carries the emotional weight of the film while remaining grounded in realism despite the surreal world unfolding around her.

The project demonstrates how original AI characters can become emotionally engaging protagonists capable of supporting meaningful cinematic narratives.

World Building & Locations

Every environment featured in Matilda was created using generative AI and cinematic compositing.

The film moves through surreal digital landscapes, futuristic interiors, abstract architectural spaces, and symbolic environments that visually represent the tension between outdated systems and emerging possibilities.

Lighting, composition, atmosphere, and visual effects were carefully designed to blur the boundaries between reality and imagination, creating a cinematic world where every location supports the emotional progression of the story.

Rather than serving simply as backgrounds, each environment functions as a narrative element that reflects Matilda's journey through memory, technology, and transformation.

Rather than presenting this history as a lecture, the film translates those ideas into visual storytelling, using AI-generated action and surreal imagery as metaphors for challenging outdated assumptions and imagining new possibilities.

The action sequences are not acts of destruction—they represent moments of transformation, where obsolete systems give way to new ways of thinking.
